Join sustainability organizations and committees
AS Environmental Resource Center
The Associated Students Environmental Resource Center leads student sustainability initiatives. Volunteer, apply for internships, and attend their events.
Climate HQ
Climate HQ was created to empower SF State's diverse students, staff, and faculty to become Climate Justice Leaders. They created the Climate Change Certificate which open to students of all majors.
Campus Sustainability Committee
The Campus Sustainability Committee sets goals for the campus, creates new sustainability initiatives, and monitors our progress. Members include students, faculty, and staff.
Transportation Demand Management Committee
The TDM Committee works to encourage sustainable, safe, and convenient commutes to campus. Members include students, faculty, and staff.
Get involved with campus sustainability
Students
- Take a sustainability-focused class.
- Major or minor in a sustainability subject, such as Environmental Studies, Ecology, Urban Studies, Geography, and more.
- Apply for a sustainability scholarship or fellowship.
- Earn a Climate Change Certificate. This certificate gives students a foundational understanding of climate change’s causes, effects, and solutions so they can take action in their communities. Open to students of all majors. There is no need to apply for or declare the certificate, just complete the courses!
- Get involved with Climate HQ and Environmental Resource Center events and initiatives.
- Donate your unwanted items to the Goodwill bins located on campus. Find them on our Sustainable SF State Map.
- Live Green Like a Gator and encourage others to do the same!
Faculty & Staff
- Invite the Office of Sustainability as guest speakers to your class or have us conduct a sustainability training with your team.
- Use Commuter Check to save money on your commute via public transportation to campus. The benefit works by allowing you to deduct up to $300 monthly out of your paycheck pretax to use for public transportation.
- Check out our Green Gator Office Guide and make your office more sustainable. Get rid of stand-alone trash bins, teach your officemates how to properly use the 3-bin compost/recycle/landfill system, buy 100% recycled paper, encourage others to take public transportation or carpool to work, and more.
- Join a Climate Change Faculty Learning Community.
- We keep a count of sustainability-focused classes and research. Make sure your sustainability classes and research are on the list.
- Donate your unwanted items to the Goodwill bins located on campus. Find them on our Sustainable SF State Map.
- Live Green Like a Gator and encourage others to do the same!

Reduce our campus footprint
Make campus more sustainable through simple everyday actions.
Walking, biking, riding transit and carpooling are powerful ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Ride your bike to campus: Learn about resources for bike commuters here.
- Take FREE public transit with your Gator Pass: Learn about your transit options here.
- Charge your electric vehicle on campus for only $1.00 per hour with no hourly limit.
- Learn what goes where in the 3-bin recycle/compost/landfill system and how to donate your old items with our Zero Waste Guide or visit sfrecycle.org.
- Reduce your personal waste with the Living Green Like a Gator Guide by learning how to lower your waste and carbon footprint.
- Print the one-page Green Gator Guide and keep it somewhere you can see it (like your refrigerator!).
- Turn off lights, printers and other electronics in your office or residence. This saves energy and money while reducing our carbon footprint.
- Check out the Sustainable SF State training below!
- Reduce your waste by refusing single use items. Bring your own bottle, mug, bag and utensils -- most campus food vendors give a 25¢ discount for bringing your own! No plastic bags or straws are offered on campus.
- Bring a reusable bottle or buy one on campus. Then refill at one of the several filling stations on campus.
- Learn how to donate and find used items on campus.
If you spot a water leak or a heater or lighting malfunction on campus, please report it to Facilities. You can help reduce costs and conserve resources.
